Health insurance giant Aetna showed a huge return on investment for their yoga and meditation wellness program. They realized savings of $3000 per employee per year regarding increased productivity and reduction in healthcare expenses.

A quote from this New York Times article, an interview with Aetna CEO……”Mr. Bertolini eagerly shared the most recent data from Aetna’s meditation and yoga programs. More than one-quarter of the company’s work force of 50,000 has participated in at least one class, and those who have report, on average, a 28 percent reduction in their stress levels, a 20 percent improvement in sleep quality and a 19 percent reduction in pain. They also become more effective on the job, gaining an average of 62 minutes per week of productivity each, which Aetna estimates is worth $3,000 per employee per year. Demand for the programs continues to rise; every class is overbooked.” “We have this groundswell inside the company of people wanting to take the classes,” Mr. Bertolini said. “It’s been pretty magical.” The article quotes Aetna’s savings in medical costs in a year at $9,000,000.

In a separate CBS News interview, Aetna CEO, “Bertolini said. “We’ve saved people’s marriages; they’ve lost weight. We had people come back and say, ‘You know what? You saved my life.’ And it cost us $197,000 to do the first program. If that saved one life, I think that’s like a huge return on investment.”

Evidence strongly suggests a positive ROI on worksite health promotion. iRest is practiced in a resting position, no special clothes required and can be done almost anywhere 

People learn iRest while lying or sitting in a resting position and listening to an iRest instructor. Sessions average 20-40 minutes. iRest is a deeply relaxing and an enjoyable experience. About half of the students in a group iRest class will fall asleep for a portion of the class. There is often a noticeable feeling of well-being after an initial session.

No special clothes are required to practice iRest and practice can be done any place where a person can relax and listen. iRest teaching includes audio sessions to practice at home, on the train, standing in line or sitting at a desk.
